Designing in-car user interfaces of the future at the Mercedes Advanced User Experience Design Studio in Silicon Valley.

THE CHALLENGE

Mercedes-Benz R&D hired me for a multi-role internship to help their hyper-specialized design team create new digital and physical interaction concepts for their next compact car model. My three main challenges were to navigate a highly political landscape, learn about the production cycles of the automotive industry as well as designing how people will interact with cars 7 years in the future.

THE Solution

I created and finished 13+ projects, two patent-pending technologies, worked with both design as well as engineering teams and was offered to extend my contract – doubling my initial time with the company.

Three roles, two teams, twelve months.

Visual User Interface Design

First four months as a Visual User Interface Designer I was doing concept development, user testing and user interfaces in the User Experience Design team.

User experience design

Second role was User Experience Designer where my focus was on technology research and prototyping e.i. VR and AR prototyping, Arduino prototyping and interior design.

Interaction design

Last four months as an Interaction Designer I created new interaction models, use cases and user flows.

Axis Communications, often referred to as the Apple of surveillance, is a Swedish manufacturer of network cameras for the physical security and video surveillance industries.

My responsibilities ranged from being an active contributor to design systems to hardware UX and software UI as well as defining processes. I lead UX & UI design in products for several industries like law enforcement, hospitals, retail, prisons, oil platforms, public spaces and smart cities.

THE CHALLENGE

Axis Communications’ current platform for managing cameras and image settings was the second iteration and served all of the video, sensor and radar product lines for almost a decade. But it was built on a legacy web framework making work for developers long and tedious. No design systems for designers were available to quickly pull fresh components for new features and functionality.

THE Solution

I helped Axis Communications establish a design system and ways for engineers and designers to closely collaborate. Created countless interactive prototypes, 50+ feature completes, worked with design as well as engineering teams across multiple product lines.

Approach

So we started from scratch. By conceptualizing high-fidelity mockups and prototypes I could design new components and layouts in order set a new visual language to replace the legacy systems in place. This gave me a firm base from where I could start delivering new components to a new design system.

Results

Based on the design system we could develop a component library in React together with front-end team. This resulted in shortened development time, increased design versatility and created a space for symbiotic collaboration across the whole organisation.

One more thing

I lead UX and UI development for Axis Body Worn Systems, the product is used by California Correctional Facilities and Germany's military army, among others. My responsibilities ranged from planning features with Project Managers, deciding new and visionary functionality with Product Managers/Owners and steering the front-end team in the right design direction.

Exciting a workforce about the future of communication.

Built an interactive brain for Volvo at internal exhibition, educating 4000 employees about direct brain-to-brain communication.

THE CHALLENGE

As humanity is becoming more digital, one in four people communicate more online than in-person. Volvo wanted to inspire their workforce about communication in the future workplace by presenting a special project during their two-day annual internal exhibition. Given a short two-month deadline we set out to create an exhibition stand and plan out the entry area where some 4000 employees would pass at HQ in Gothenburg, Sweden.

THE Solution

We set out to predict what the next smartphone-technology might be. By building an interactive brain, we got employees excited about our vision where smartphone-tech is old and obsolete.

Internet: A reflection of ourselves

The internet today is essentially a cluster of everyone's digital self – a collection of all our knowledge, but also what we love, hate and fear. Data of all your primal emotions is collected online like a reflection of all your motivations, emotions, learnings, and memories. A sort of digital identity.

Artificial General Intelligence risks

Artificial general intelligence (AGI) will leave us helpless trying to keep up with it's speed.

We are the biological boot loader for AI. Like a cybernetic collective of people and machines, we are all connected to Google search and Facebook, feeding AI with our questions, answers and primal emotions. We are all building progressively better intelligence and the percentage of intelligence that is non-human is increasing. Eventually, we will represent a very small percentage of intelligence.

When an artificial intelligence learns to utilize the power of other AI's, artificial general intelligence or AGI is born. Self-aware, capable of improving itself with abilities to manipulate electrical grids, hospitals, traffic, stock markets and billions of other internet connected devices and digital identities – AGI is imposing great risk on humanity, leaving us helpless to keep up with it's speed.

The interpretation of a message is 7 percent verbal, 38 percent vocal and 55 percent visual from facial expression. We're loosing up to 93% of communication when communicating with our thumbs.

Fast brain, slow thumbs

We are getting more and more connected but are, at this point, constrained by bandwidth. Our input/output is slow. Output got even worst with thumbs. We used to have output with ten fingers, now we only use our thumbs. While AI and electronics are talking to each other at up to 5G speeds, we're stuck at thumb speed.

Neural lace: Enhancing human communication...

Our smartphones have speakers, we have mouths. Smartphones have microphones, we've got ears. Phone's got HD cameras, we eyes. They accelerometers, we balance. Memory, hippocampus. Accelerometer, balance. Sensors, senses.

We can argue that the only thing the brain lacks to a smartphone, is an internet connection. A neural lace is an ultra-thin mesh that can be implanted in the skull, forming a collection of electrodes capable of monitoring brain function. It creates an interface between the brain and the machine.

COMMUNICATION of TOMORROW - FAST

Reducing the risk of artificial general intelligence.

As neural lace technology matures we can start decoding brain activity a.k.a thoughts, sending them like text messages to each other. Enabling true instant brain to brain communication. This way we'll communicate at the same speeds as electronics do today, enabling us to live symbiotically with AGI and reducing the risk of being attacked.

Employees arrived in groups of 30, interacted with the brain during a 3-4 minute talk and watched demonstration videos on the tv-screen about how communication would look like in the future.
